WA Driver’s License Testing

If you have started a driver’s education course, you must complete all course requirements before taking either the Knowledge or Skills test.

Your Washington State ID Number
If you do not have a WA ID# or permit you can follow this link to apply for an ID Number. When you have completed this process, log into your LicenseExpress account to find your ID Number. With your ID# you can register for your exam with us.

WHAT TO BRING TO THE TESTS

  • I am part of the state pilot program to utilise online exam taking. For that to happen come with your License eXpress login information (the same one you use to get your WDL#) and any internet capable device (phone, tablet, laptop).
  • A government-issued PHOTO ID – If your permit does not have your picture, you must also bring a current high school or college ID which includes your photo. Without proper photo ID we CANNOT test you.
  • Cash – please bring exact change if you haven’t prepaid online.
  • A good attitude – stay calm and focus, you’ve prepared for this and are ready.

KNOWLEDGE EXAM (Written Test) – $30 per attempt

The written test covers the information found in the Washington Driver Guide. You will want to study and review it to do well on the test. The State provided test has 40 questions and you must get at least 80% (32 questions) correct to pass. If you fail you can reschedule for another attempt (we recommend further review of the Driver’s Guide). There are practice tests you can find online which may be helpful as well. A different version of the test will be administered to you after each attempt.

The Department of Licensing has strict guidelines for administering the test. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early. Doors will be locked 5 minutes before the scheduled start time. Only those taking the exam are allowed in the room. The test usually lasts about 35min. STUDY UP – GOOD LUCK!

SKILLS EXAM (Drive Test) – $50 per attempt

To be eligible to take the driving test, you must have passed the written test, passing scores for the written test are valid for two years.

The drive test will examine your control of the vehicle as well as your awareness of and adherence to the traffic laws. The videos below give you a good idea of what to expect.
